Our Story
Some doors lead to dinner. JUA’s once led to an illegal gambling den.
Founded in 2017 by chef Chet Adkins, JUA occupies a three-story former gambling house hidden in the historic alleys of Charoen Krung. Its name comes from the call to turn a card in pok daeng, a Thai game similar to blackjack. Loosely translated as “hit me,” it is a playful tribute to the illicit card room that operated here for more than 20 years.
One of the first modern dining destinations in Bangkok’s emerging Creative District, JUA became part of a neighborhood alive with galleries, studios and street art. Inside, a terrazzo bar, custom furnishings and large-format photography create an intimate, minimalist expression of Japanese modernism.
Inspired by the relaxed and social spirit of a Japanese izakaya, Chet’s ingredient-driven menu begins with kushiyaki: meat, seafood and vegetables grilled over binchotan. Japanese technique meets Korean flavors, global influences, comforting shared plates and playful interpretations of 1970s cocktail snacks. Behind the bar, Nhueng completes the izakaya experience with artisanal sake, distinctive wines, Japanese whiskies and handcrafted cocktails.
Eclectic music fills the room as after-work drinks become late-night gatherings around the counter. Intimate without feeling formal, JUA brings together the spirit of Osaka’s backstreets, the creative energy of Charoen Krung and the laid-back soul of Bangkok’s Old Town.
